Figura Extempore is an interactive art installation that digitally draws the outline of people and objects that enter and exit its space.
As people maneuver throughout the installation, a computer program recognizes and sketches their form on the corresponding projection. Moving rapidly will illustrate someone at every point in their motion, leaving a trail of drawings as evidence of their passing. Individuals can use their own bodies as an electronic illustration tool to create unique images and marks left up to their imagination.
Once someone leaves the space, a screenshot of their drawing is taken and uploaded to an image library where a random title for their sketch is generated by the software from a database of predetermined words. Also upon exiting a small amount of the rendering is erased.
If someone stays in one spot for long enough, they will draw deeper and darker impressions of themselves that will take longer to remove, with evidence of their influence within the space surviving for a longer period of time than the average passerby.
As the days and the weeks move along, drawings are constantly being made, saved, and erased, with the impressions of peoples motions being in a constant state of birth, death, and preservation.
